It is the capital of Dhankuta District and also the administrative headquarter of Eastern Development Region (One of the five Development Regions of Nepal). Many regional and NGO offices are located in this town. Though it is the regional headquarter, it is not a very big town. It is surrounded by rural villages which are couple of hours walking distance.
Rais, Limbus, Newars are the main inhabitant of the town. The majority of local people are involved in agriculture and farming: rice, corn, millet, citrus (orange/mandarin), vegetables. Some of them are also involved in government jobs, trade and business.
The town of Dhankuta is connected by well paved highway (North-South) Koshi Highway. Frequent daily bus service is available from Dharan.
